LECTORS AND EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS MINISTRY
1. SCOPE: The Lectors and Eucharistic Minister Ministry operates in the area of assistance at liturgical services and in the distribution of the Blessed Sacrament. 2. PURPOSE: The purpose of the Lectors and Eucharistic Minister Ministry is to: i) Provide readers to proclaim the word of God at masses and other liturgical services, and ii) Provide Eucharistic Minister to distribute the Blessed Sacrament at masses and to homebound or sick parishioners. 3. FUNCTIONS: a) Only a Deacon may carry the Book of the Gospels in the entry procession before mass begins. b) Lectors read the prescribed scriptural readings for the day in accordance with the church calendar. This includes the First Reading, the Responsorial Psalm when it is not sung, and the Second reading when prescribed by the church calendar. The Lector may also read the Prayers of the Faithful when directed by the celebrant and may also read any parish announcements. c) Eucharistic Ministers are trained in their duties by the Ministry Chairpersons and/or the clergy. d) Eucharistic Ministers distribute both hosts and wine to the congregation at liturgical services and assist in the cleaning of sacred vessels at the conclusion of services. Prior to mass, they place their names on the "sign-in board" near the sacristy indicating whether they will distribute either hosts or wine. e) Eucharistic Ministers may distribute communion to homebound or sick parishioners in accordance with a pre-arranged schedule using the procedures prescribed for the Ministry. 4. ORGANIZATION & MEMBERSHIP: The Ministry consists of volunteers who are appointed by the Pastor. At week-end and holiday masses usually three (3) host distributors are assigned together with four (4) wine distributors. At week-day masses, usually two ministers assist the celebrant in the distribution of wine. The Ministry Chairperson establishes schedules for attendance at masses and other liturgical functions. If a Eucharistic Minister is unable to serve in accordance with the schedule, he/she is responsible for obtaining a substitute 5. SCHEDULE: The mass schedule is published by the Ministry Chairpersons. Training and information meetings are scheduled on an "as required" basis. 6. COMMITTEE COSTS AND OTHER PARISH GROUP RELATIONSHIPS: Clerical materials are provided by the parish staff. There are no other costs associated with the operations of the Ministry nor does it have any relations with any other parish committee.
