NewsFather Sam Scott Named Rector of Saint John Fisher Seminary
The Reverend Samuel V. Scott pastor of Saint Joseph Parish since June 2002 has been named Rector of the Diocese of Bridgeport's Saint John Fisher Seminary Residence in Stamford, Connecticut.
Father Sam accepted the position at the request of Bishop William E. Lori, Bishop of Bridgeport, and announced the appointment to Saint Joseph Parishioners last weekend, June 21 and 22, at all Masses. The new assignment, which will be effective around August 1, requires that Father Sam resign as pastor at Saint Joseph. At the seminary, he is succeeding Father Joseph Linck who is resigning for health reasons.
"We are all aware of the critical shortage of priests in our Diocese and throughout the Church," Father Sam said last weekend. "I am honored to have been offered this opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of these young men as they begin their journey to priestly ordination."
Father Sam will be the fourth Rector at Saint John Fisher Seminary, but the first to bring experience as a pastor to the job. "Fisher House is a place of discernment," said Father Kevin Royal, the Diocese's Episcopal Vicar for Clergy Personnel. "Bishop Lori felt it was very important for our seminarians to be exposed to someone with 'real world' experience right from the beginning of their formation." Father Sam's academic background, prior teaching experience at Saint John Fisher, and his mentoring of several seminarians over the past several years in addition to his pastoral experience made him "an ideal candidate" for the Rector's position, Father Royal said.
The process of selecting Father Sam's successor already has begun. Father Royal met this past week with our school principal, heads of the Parish councils and members of the Parish staff to get input on the "state of the Parish" and the qualities they felt would be desirable in the new pastor.
In speaking to Parishioners last weekend, Father Sam said, "My time at Saint Joseph has been wonderful. You made me feel welcome from the very beginning, and many warm friendships have been formed over these six years. I ask that you keep me in your prayers, as you will be in mine."
